Robotic mowers are genuinely useful machines, but they have a narrower envelope of usefulness than the marketing suggests. Understanding that envelope before you buy is the difference between a tool that runs quietly in the background of your life and a subscription to a hobby you didn't sign up for.

The wire-free promise has a fine print

Many newer models advertise boundary-free navigation using cameras, GPS, or ultrasonic sensors instead of a perimeter wire. That sounds like a clean upgrade until you realize that a mature oak casting a shadow across the north corner of your yard at 4 p.m. can confuse vision-based systems enough to leave a consistent unmowed patch in exactly that spot. Wire-based systems have their own problems — a single nick from an edging tool or a dog that digs can drop the whole system — but they don't fail silently. They throw an error. Wire-free systems sometimes just... underperform and log a success anyway.

If your yard has mixed sun and shade, deep overhangs, or a covered patio the mower needs to navigate under, wire-free navigation is still a work in progress. The technology is improving each season, but it's not mature enough to treat as equivalent to a human's spatial awareness.

What slope numbers actually mean for your yard

Manufacturers list maximum slope handling in degrees or percent grade. A figure like 35% grade (roughly 19 degrees) sounds comfortable until you measure your own yard and realize that a grade steeper than about 20% (11 degrees) puts real stress on the drive wheels of lighter units. The mower may handle it on dry days and then spin in place or fail to return to its dock after rain, when grass blades are slick.

Weigh your mower before buying. Budget units typically run between 5 and 8 kilograms. That low weight is good for transport and bad for traction on anything that isn't nearly flat. If more than a quarter of your lawn has a visible slope — not a gentle crown, but an actual rise — look for units in the heavier tier and check that the drive wheel pattern is listed as all-terrain or dual-wheel, not single-contact.

Blade systems are the part nobody reads about until it's too late

Most robotic mowers use a floating disc with small razor-style blades that pivot freely. The blades themselves are cheap to replace, which sounds like a feature, but the disc housing and the central spindle are where units start to fail after 18 months to three years of use. Grass clippings pack into the spindle cavity, moisture follows, and corrosion starts. You'll hear a slight vibration change before it becomes a real problem, but most owners don't notice until the cut quality drops noticeably.

Replacement spindle assemblies are often proprietary and sometimes discontinued faster than the mower itself. Before you commit to a unit, search whether replacement parts — not just blades, but the disc assembly — are available from third-party suppliers, not just the manufacturer. If they aren't, you're buying a machine with a hidden expiration date.

Blade height range matters more than people expect. A range of 20–60 mm sounds adequate, but if you're maintaining a fine fescue lawn you might keep at 25 mm, while a utility lawn with clover and rye stays healthier around 50 mm. Units with fewer than four height increments in that range make fine adjustment annoying.

Rain sensors, scheduling, and the realities of British or Pacific Northwest weather

The honest limitation of robotic mowers as a category is that they're optimized for Mediterranean-ish conditions — warm, mostly dry summers with predictable weather windows. If you live somewhere that gets 180+ days of measurable precipitation per year, a rain sensor that pauses the mower is helpful, but it can also mean the mower runs so infrequently that grass gets ahead of it. Robotic mowers cut a small amount frequently. When they're paused for days at a stretch, that model breaks down.

There's no elegant solution here. You can override the rain sensor and accept some tracking of clippings into the dock, or you can let the grass grow and run longer sessions when the weather clears. Neither option is what the product video showed you.

Connectivity isn't a luxury, it's how you diagnose problems

A mower without app connectivity forces you to walk out and check the unit physically every time something goes wrong. Given that these machines work when you're not watching, that's a real problem. App connectivity lets you see error codes, review session maps, and catch drift in coverage zones before they become established bad habits in the mower's path planning.

That said, cloud-dependent apps are a risk. If the manufacturer discontinues support for an older model's software, you may lose scheduling and diagnostics entirely while the hardware still works fine. It's happened with several brands across the category.
